Brentor is our reception and year 1 class and is taught by Mrs Trevorah, Mrs Abbott-Bray and supported by Matt Knight.
In Brentor we have a big focus on learning through play and small group focus sessions. All our leaning is practical based allowing children to use concrete objects to explore and expand their knowledge. In school we encourage all our children to develop their skills to become responsible, independent, resilient, collaborative and reflective in all they do. Our children are encouraged to accept mistakes as part of their learning journey and thrive when challenged.
Our theme for the Autumn Term is ‘Changes’, please see our Curriculum overview, Knowledge Organiser and Vocabulary Mat to see what the children will be learning about in their different subjects. Our initial learning within this will take a history, geography and science focus with the children exploring the significant event of The Great Fire of London, developing an understanding of our continents as well as investigating plants.
Phonics is a huge part of our curriculum especially in the early years which your child is at school. We want your child to develop a love of reading and a want to read for themselves.
In Brentor we start by teaching phonics to the children in the first week they begin with us in September. This means that they learn how to ‘read’ the sounds in words and how those sounds can be written down. This is essential for reading, but it also helps children learn to spell well. We teach the children simple ways of remembering these sounds and letters through rhymes, pictures and colour.
To encourage their love for reading we use high quality text as our class read and English focus to engage and spark curiosity as well as having a daily vote to choose what story we will read at the end of the day allowing children the choice. As part of our reading sessions we use book talk which is about the ability to talk about books, developing the confidence to offer ideas and then reshape them in the light of other contributions.
Throughout school our main focus is reading and developing a real love to read and listen to a range of books. Therefore our home learning is mainly focused about developing a range of reading and comprehension skills. Children are given a 'Book Bag Book' weekly which is closely matched to phonemes (sounds) which your child has been taught as well as a library book which is there to encourage a love of sharing stories. In conjunction with reading children have daily phonics lessons to promote recognition of sounds they will come across throughout the English language. Therefore please see the link below which supports children and adults to read and say the sound correctly.
Alongside our reading books children in year 1 are given a knowledge organiser linked to our current theme for children to learn and explore.
