PE, Sport and Being Healthy

 

PE and Sport are an important part of school life here at LewTrenchard. We believe that children thrive on the opportunity to try their best and to experience a wide range of sports and games. PE should be fun and enjoyable and should reflect the range of children's interests across the school. We believe that participating in school events helps children to feel a sense of belonging and also a sense of pride in their own efforts and achievements.

 

Primary School Sport Premium

Sport premium is a funding stream for schools to provide high quality PE & Sport equipment, experiences and coaching, encouraging sport development in schools and inspiring future athletes. This year we will be offering a wide range of activities in PE lessons, after-school clubs and school team events:

Our Staff work alongside specialist coaches (For Example, Coaches from Plymouth Argyle Community Sports and OCRA Gymnastics), gaining extra subject knowledge and CPD in PE delivery. We have employed swimming coaches from Mount Kelly Swimming Pool to improve swimming, to give all pupils confidence to swim 25 metres and to be able to use life saving skills by the end of Year 6. The funding has also provided extra provision in the teaching and learning of Zumba/Dance, including offering family fun sessions to get the whole family moving. We are SLA members of the Sports Partnership OCRA, which provides on-going professional development, sports festivals and inter-school events.

 

Our PE Curriculum

 

A wide range of PE is delivered to the pupils at LewTrenchard. The outside areas (such as the Forest, Field & Playground) help us to be able to offer a wide range of activities. Many areas of the PE curriculum are taught by our class teachers with support and expertise from our sports coaches. We are committed to continual professional development, enhancing teachers' skills in delivering the PE curriculum. Assessing becomes an integral part of our PE lessons, allowing pupils a developing progression in skills. Staff training takes place in school and through attending courses run by OCRA and other organisations.

 

National Curriculum

Key stage 1

Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities

  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending

  • perform dances using simple movement patterns

Key stage 2

Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination

  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending

  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]

  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns

  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team

  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best

Swimming and water safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]

  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

 

PE Coaches & Young Leaders

PE coaches are employed to work alongside our teachers to enhance our PE curriculum. They bring a skilled enthusiasm to our lessons, while providing CPD for our staff. Annually we offer all year 5 & 6 pupils the opportunity to work alongside sports coaches to gain Young Sport Leader skills which equip them with the confidence and ideas to run a range of sport activities for the school population at break times.
